Tacos are such a delicious dinner, and they are so easy to make from scratch! You don’t need to get a seasoning packet. Instead, you just need a few basic seasonings and ingredients to create this tasty dish without any extra preservatives. Once you make your own from scratch tacos, you will never want to go back to the seasoning packs again!

I think everyone needs a simple tacos recipe. Tacos are such a staple in our home, and they are so easy to whip up. Plus, you can make variations of this basic recipe to include chicken tacos, shredded beef tacos, fish tacos, or even meatless taco options.
Really, the secret is all in the seasonings that you use to flavor your taco filling. In my opinion, there is no reason to buy a taco seasoning mix. The mixes tend to be on the expensive side for how much of the spices that are actually included, and they also include a lot of preservatives. I like that this seasoning mix is able to help our budget in a small way, and it is one way I can eliminate some unwanted ingredients from our diets.
Also, if you are a huge fan of tacos, like my family is, then you will love that you can follow the directions below for ground beef tacos, but use the seasonings for whatever type of tacos you want. If you want some ideas, you could try out my recipes for Shredded Beef Tacos and Chicken Taco Bowls as a start.
To make a meal stretch and add some extra nutrition, I also like to add some lentils or beans to my taco filling. The addition will mean that the tacos will have more protein, and I love getting to add in a vegetable without it being obvious. That way if any of my family is thinking about being picky, they probably won’t even know that there was a vegetable there in the first place.

What do you put on tacos?
The question of what to put on a taco is somewhat difficult to answer since taco topping options are nearly endless. However, some of my favorites are below:
-Salsa
-Cheese
-Jalapeños
-Sour Cream
-Lettuce or Greens
-Onions
-Cilantro
-Lime
To find other toppings options, you can check out this post: Instant Pot Shredded Beef Tacos. There are so many options that it can be difficult to choose, but that is one of the fun parts. You can always try different toppings with the next one!

What are tacos made of?
Tacos are generally made of a corn or flour tortilla with a seasoned meat (or meat alternative) filling. The filling is then topped with a variety of toppings usually including a salsa, cheese, and lettuce or onion. When you make them at home, you are able to more easily choose both your fillings and toppings.
Can you eat tacos without taco seasoning?
While you can eat tacos without taco seasoning, it is not my preference. The taco seasoning is what gives the filling its flavor, and without it, the dining experience is not the same.

Ingredients:
- Ground Beef
- Lentils or Black Beans (optional)
- Chili Powder
- Paprika
- Cumin
- Onion Powder
- Garlic Powder
- Salt & Pepper
- Water
- Tortillas
- Toppings of Choice
How to Make From Scratch Tacos:

To get started, you will need to brown the ground beef in a medium sized skillet. (You could also cook up chicken or beef roast how you like, and shred into the skillet.)

Once the beef (or other meat) is cooked, add the lentils or beans, if using, and seasonings over the top, and then pour the water over the top. You will want to make sure to add enough water that the spices mix easily.

Mix thoroughly, and let simmer until the water evaporates to a small amount left in the bottom of the skillet.
Scoop a quarter to a third of a cup of the seasoned meat into your tortilla and top it with whatever toppings you would like. Then roll up and enjoy!
