Easy Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup in the Instant Pot

Chicken noodle soup is a classic recipe that can be so satisfying on a cold winter day, or when you are feeling under the weather! This recipe uses simple ingredients to create this traditional meal, and it can take under 30 minutes to make thanks to the Instant Pot. Plus, I’ll even give you some options for how to customize it depending on what you already have in your pantry and fridge.

A tasty and healthy soup for winter time!

Unfortunately, this time of year seems to be when everyone is on the verge of getting sick, is sick, or is recovering from being sick. With the cold weather and the storms that have been rolling through here, it makes sense. I can tell it’s bad when my hubby starts asking for this soup or herbal teas. He doesn’t usually ask for those things unless he starts to feel poorly, so when he does, I try to get right on it.

Wait… You can cook noodles in the Instant Pot???

Actually, yes, you can totally cook noodles in the Instant Pot! This chicken noodle soup recipe came about because I wanted to use up some leftover chicken from a whole roasted chicken, but my hubby specifically asked for the noodles to be included. When you are including noodles for a pressure cooker recipe, it is super easy to overcook them in the Instant Pot! Between the pressure and the fact that they are staying in the soup broth, noodles can get extra soft pretty easily. However, I have found a couple of options for you guys:

Option 1: You pressure cook the noodles in the soup broth with the vegetables and chicken. This is the option I use the most often, but I want to warn you ahead of time that you will want to pressure cook the soup for a very short amount of time! I usually only pressure cook the noodles on a setting of 0 for the timer. The Instant Pot will actually do this! It will bring everything up to the high pressure and then release it, which has been the way to get my noodles from being too soft. If you have noodles that take a long time to cook, you can get away with a longer cook time in the Instant Pot, but I wouldn’t go much longer than 2 minutes. Because the noodles will be staying in the broth, not in a thicker sauce, they will continue to soak up the water slowly even after the cooking time is over.

Option 2: You cook the noodles separately on the stove top while everything else cooks in the Instant Pot, and then you add the noodles right before serving. This is a great option for anyone who is picky about the texture of their noodles. Also, if you are wanting to cook the chicken from raw in the soup broth, then you will want to cook the noodles on the stove, since it will take much longer to cook the chicken.

A quick and easy meal!

For this recipe, I will be giving you some set amounts, but this is the first recipe that I really encourage you to experiment! If you are just starting to use the Instant Pot, I highly recommend that you start with a simpler recipe like Teriyaki Chicken, or BBQ Chicken Sandwiches. However, if you’ve had a chance to practice and feel confident in your ability to use the Instant Pot, then try this recipe out! It isn’t very complicated, and the results are super tasty!

Is chicken noodle soup good for you?

Yes, there are a lot of articles on the health benefits of chicken noodle soup. The ingredients will give your body protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. Depending on the vegetables you choose and the quality of the broth or stock you use, you could also add other immune boosting benefits as well! However, you always need to be aware of your own health and nutritional requirements when you are meal planning.

Is chicken noodle soup gluten free?

Your chicken noodle soup can be made gluten free as long as you switch out gluten free noodles for the regular noodles in the recipe. There should not be any other gluten added to this soup. If you are celiac though, I would double check the broth and seasonings you use to be sure that there is no gluten contamination possible.
