Double treble crochet stitches are a simple way to bring some height to your crochet projects. This tall stitch is very basic in construction, but there are many ways that it can be used. While it may not be the most common or most basic of stitches, it is definitely a stitch that can be quick to master, and it can bring with it options for how to add height as well as a lighter texture and structure to your crochet.

The double treble is not a stitch that you will see used by itself very often, but it can be. It can also be used in different stitch combinations to create designs with a fun twist or to add a detailed element to the work. I have personally used it in stitch combinations that created some beautiful statements, and it brings an airy and even summery feel to crochet projects.

How you use this stitch will be entirely up to you and your pattern, but let’s grab our hook and yarn and get started with this tutorial!

What is a double treble crochet?

The double treble crochet stitch is a tall crochet stitch that can be made with just the basic skills of yarning over, inserting into a stitch, and pulling through loops. This stitch is different because to start you will yarn over 3 times before you even insert your hook into the stitch you are crocheting into. This allows you to create a very tall stitch that takes up a lot of space very quickly.

Notes and Tips:

-Double treble crochet is often abbreviated dtr. However, check the pattern you are using to see how the designer abbreviated the stitch.

-This stitch can also be called the double triple crochet stitch.

-You should be sure to know how to crochet a chain, a double crochet stitch, and a treble crochet stitch. If you need help with any of these, check out my post tutorials!

-Try to create a looser base chain since the double treble crochet stitches are a more airy stitch and take up a little more space. Blocking will also help if you need to stretch the stitches out some.

How to Double Treble Crochet:

If you have worked up the treble crochet stitch, then you should have no problem learning to crochet the double treble crochet stitch. The steps are:

  1. Chain your length plus 5 more.
  2. Yarn over 3 times. Insert your hook into the sixth chain from the hook, yarn over, and pull through. You should have 5 loops on the hook.
  3. Yarn over and pull through two of the loops (repeat 3 more times).
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each stitch across. At the end of the row, chain 5, and turn. Continue to work double treble crochets in each stitch across.

Remember to always check the pattern notes for any design that uses this stitch! Not all designers will count the turning chain as a stitch, and not all designers will have the same number of chains in their turning chain. If they do not specify, I would check with them, if possible, to be sure you use the stitch correctly.

The front post double treble crochet can add a lot of texture to your crochet. You will complete the double treble crochet stitch as normal, except you will not insert your hook into the top of the stitch indicated. Instead, you will need to work around the post of the stitch from the front to the back. Insert your hook in the space between the previous stitch and the indicated stitch, and then push it through the opposite side of the stitch post. Then you can yarn over, pull back through, and complete the rest of the stitch as normal. You can complete these over the top of previously crocheted rows to create a fun texture over the top of your crochet project.
