Every crocheter has to start out by learning the most basic crochet stitches. All of these stitches are essential to success as a crocheter, and they are the building blocks of how to form more complicated stitches down the road.

Crochet is not a hard skill to learn. However, many people who want to learn don’t know where to start. These six beginner crochet stitches are easy to learn and are full of the foundational skills you will need to learn to grow as a crocheter.
I highly suggest that you start with a yarn hook and yarn that are easy for you to handle and feel comfortable. This will vary for each person, so you may have to try out different yarns and hooks before you find something that you feel comfortable with.
What is really great about this list is that you can learn them in various orders. I have laid them out in the order I think would be the easiest. However, once you know how to chain and single crochet, there is no need to learn these in a particular order.
Each of these stitches have a full blog post with more detail to help you. It will be linked in the headings below!
If you are new to crochet, then I suggest you pin this post for later, so you can come back to find the tutorials!
Chain
Before you learn any actual stitches, you will need to learn the foundation for every crochet stitch: the chain! This is how you will start almost all of your projects, and it is essential for beginner crocheters to learn.

How to Crochet a Chain:
A crochet chain is so simple to create with these steps:
- Insert your hook into the slip knot.
- Yarn over, and pull through the loop on the hook.
Single Crochet
Single crochet is the first actual stitch that most beginner crocheters learn. It is very simple to learn and teaches skills that are essential for being successful with other stitches.

How to Crochet the Single Crochet:
Here are the steps for how to complete a single crochet:
- Insert into the second chain from the hook or stitch.
- Yarn over again, and pull back through the stitch. (You should have 2 loops on the hook.)
- Yarn over once more, and pull through both loops. Your stitch is complete!
Double Crochet
Double crochet is another one of the most basic stitches that beginner crocheters learn. It builds off of what you have learned with the single crochet stitch, and adds to it slightly.

How to Crochet a Double Crochet:
Here are the steps for how to complete a double crochet:
- Yarn over, and insert into the third chain from the hook or the stitch you are working into.
- Yarn over, and pull back through the stitch. (You should have 3 loops on the hook.)
- Yarn over, and pull through 2 loops on the hook. (You should have 2 loops on the hook.)
- Yarn over, and pull through the final 2 loops on the hook. Your stitch is complete!
Half Double Crochet
The half double crochet is a mix between the single crochet and the double crochet stitch. It is an easy stitch to create that is taller than the single crochet and a little less airy than the double crochet.

How to Crochet the Half Double Crochet:
The steps to do the half double crochet are:
- Yarn over, and insert your hook into the second chain from the hook or the stitch you are working into.
- Yarn over, and pull back through the stitch. (You should have 3 loops on the hook.)
- Yarn over, and pull through all three loops on the hook. Your stitch is complete!
Slip Stitch
The slip stitch is an essential stitch to learn! It can be used in so many projects. From working in the round to creating ribbing for garments, this stitch is a necessary one for beginner crocheters to learn.

How to Crochet the Slip Stitch:
The steps of the slip stitch are:
- Insert your hook into the second chain from the hook, or the stitch you are working into.
- Yarn over, and pull through the stitch.
- Pull through the loop already on the hook. You have completed your stitch!
Treble Crochet
The treble crochet stitch is the tallest basic stitch for beginner crocheters to learn. It will use the skills you have learned in all the other stitches, and while it does not get used as often, it is still an important skill to learn.

How to Crochet the Treble Crochet:
The steps for the treble crochet stitch are:
- Yarn over twice, and insert your hook into the fifth chain from the hook, or the stitch you are working into.
- Yarn over, and pull through the stitch. (You should have 4 loops on the hook.)
- Yarn over and pull through 2 loops. Repeat this step 3 times. You’ve now completed a treble crochet stitch!
These 6 stitches are the basics of what you need to know as a beginner crocheter! I hope they help you learn and grow in your crochet skills and bring some fun creative opportunities into your life!
