Even Moss Stitch Blanket

The even moss stitch blanket is a perfect beginner blanket pattern with a lovely texture and perfect squish! With super chunky blanket yarn as your material, this blanket can be whipped up quickly. This makes it the perfect winter crochet project!

Who doesn’t love curling up under a cozy, handmade blanket in the winter time? With the weather being cold and forbidding, I love cuddling up as much as possible with a blanket and hot drink.

One of my favorite things to crochet are blankets. There are so many pattern options with varying yarns and stitches. Most of my own crochet blankets though have been with chunky yarn.

Chunky yarn blankets are so much fun for a lot of reasons. For one thing, I love the heavier feel of the finished blanket. It is almost like having a weighted blanket sometimes, but instead, it’s handmade. Plus, I can crochet a blanket with chunky yarn in much less time than with smaller yarn weights.

Plus, if you are beginner crocheter, then this blanket pattern is designed just for you! This pattern uses only basic stitches and is a simple rectangle. You only need to use the half double crochet stitch, slip stitch, and single crochet stitch to create this blanket.

You can crochet this easy blanket with or without stripes. To crochet with the stripes, you need only follow the below directions. However, you could easily do without the color changes, and you would have a lovely textured throw!

So if you love a chunky, squishy, totally cozy blanket that you can crochet pretty quickly, then this is the perfect blanket for you!

Blanket Yarn:

Blanket yarn has been super popular in the crochet world for so many reasons. It has such a soft feel and gives projects a wonderful squish that is so fun. When designing this blanket, I used blanket yarn since it was going to be a gift, and I wanted to make sure that all the goodness of a chunky crochet blanket were felt.

However, I do not always recommend using blanket yarn. If you think that the project will be used really roughly, or maybe you have little ones around who tend to be hard on things, then I would suggest that you use another chunky yarn that will stand up to that use. I know that there are several yarn brands that have high quality acrylic or cotton chunky (6) yarn that may work better and would still create a beautiful even moss stitch blanket!

How to Crochet the Even Moss Stitch:

The even moss stitch is a simple crochet stitch that alternates between the slip stitch and the half double crochet stitch. In this blanket pattern, you will start with the slip stitch, then complete a half double crochet in the next stitch, and continue this alternating pattern across. (This is opposite of the video below, but the process is the same!) Whenever you use the even moss stitch, make sure to not crochet too tightly. This is especially important if you choose to use the blanket yarn as it will be difficult to crochet into if your stitches are too tight.

Supplies:

-6 Skeins of Big Ball Bernat Blanket Yarn (I used Blush Pink, Forest Sage, and Almond.)

-9mm Crochet Hook

-Yarn Needle

Blanket Size:

The size is dependent on what yarn you use. You can follow the directions below or create your own custom size. My own blanket was throw size, but you could easily crochet your own blanket to create a baby blanket size, a crib blanket, or whatever size you desire!

To create a custom blanket size, you will need to crochet an odd number of chains to the length you desire plus 2 more. This will allow you to crochet a blanket the size you wish. Remember that with the border, your blanket will be slightly larger.

-Written in US terms.

-Chain at the beginning of rounds does not count as a st.

-Repeat the directions in the asterisks (*) across the row.

-Total st count for each round will be in the parentheses.

How to Crochet an Even Moss Stitch Blanket for Beginners:

Blanket:

Ch 81 

1. Starting in the second chain from the hook, *sl st, hdc* across (80). Ch 1 & turn.
2. *Sl st, hdc* across (80). Ch 1 & turn.
3. Repeat Row 2 for a total of 66 rows.

If you are wanting to crochet the stripes, cc every three rows at the end of the row. Finish with the stripe color that you started with. Do NOT fasten off.

Border:

After the ch 1 & turn, sc in each st across the top, evenly down the side, once in each base ch, and evenly back up the side. Sl st into the first sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.
