My obsession with tea began when I was in high school, and my youth pastor’s wife introduced me to the chai tea latte. The spicy, creamy goodness that warmed you up from the inside out got me hooked, and from there, I dove into the world of tea and fell in love. I slowly became obsessed with trying different black teas, which then led to green and herbal teas, to loose leaf, and even harvesting fresh herbs and steeping them to add their tastes to my palate. From there I moved on to coffee, but I still absolutely adore taking out my tea pot and brewing a strong cup of tea when I have the chance.

Nowadays, mom-life has me drinking coffee more often, but I occasionally have the pleasure of drinking my old favorite homemade chai tea latte. For the sake of simplicity, over the past several years, I have been making my own powdered chai tea latte mix based on a recipe I found at The Kitchen is my Playground, but as I often do, I altered and adapted it to my own tastes.
Most often, this chai latte powdered mix is my go-to in the afternoon or evening when I want something warm, but I don’t want to take the time to brew up a “real” cup of tea. Sometimes you only have a few minutes to sit back and relax, and this easy chai tea latte mix has really come in handy for me during those times. Although, I have been known to reach for it when curling up with a good book on the couch. In reality, this chai latte mix can be more than just a convenience and become a go-to instead.
Why you need this Easy Chai Tea Latte Mix:
With the holidays coming up as well, my goal to try not to live off of coffee may really be put to the test. However, all of the spicy, creamy goodness of traditional (or Starbucks) chai lattes are definitely present in this easy chai tea latte recipe, and I may be leaning on it to help me through this busy season. Also, since this is the best homemade chai latte recipe in my book, it would make the perfect Christmas gift, especially if you wrapped it in a mason jar! Made from scratch gifts are some of my favorites!
But no matter what time of the year, who wouldn’t want some spicy, creamy goodness? Especially if you add just a splash of heavy whipping cream… that definitely takes it to the next level. Heavy whipping cream is my secret love and guilty pleasure when it comes to coffee and tea. However, if it’s not your thing, you could totally leave it out.
Also, did I mention that this chai latte powder mix is low on caffeine? With me being more sensitive to caffeine, especially in the afternoon and evening, I love that I can still enjoy this mix without the caffeine buzz. This benefit exists because the Lipton powdered black tea that I use has a very low caffeine content, which makes it perfect for an evening treat, but still lets me get as much sleep as I can with a 5 month old.
So overall, it is easy to make this chai tea latte recipe at home! This from scratch mix is one of my favorite go-to drinks during this time of year. With helping me fight the cold weather and bringing back so many delightful and delicious memories, it’s going to be a staple in my house for many years to come. Follow along, and I’ll share just how to make the best chai tea mix with you.

What do you need:
- Nonfat powdered dry milk
- Granulated sugar
- Powdered black tea (I use Lipton Powdered Ice Tea because that is what is sold near me, but you can use any brand you have access to)
- Powdered French vanilla creamer
- Powdered non-dairy creamer
- Spices: cinnamon, all-spice, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, & cardamom
- Heavy whipping cream (optional)
- Kettle (electric or stove top) with water
- Glass bowl & whisk or food processor to mix
- Mason jar or air-tight container for storage
Tips for making homemade chai tea mix:
- For ease when mixing, place the ingredients in a food processor. Pulsing first then turn on continuously until everything is evenly incorporated. However, if you do not have access to a food processor, you can use a glass bowl and whisk together. The ingredients will not have the same color/consistency. The end result though will taste the same when added to hot water.
- To really add decadence to this chai latte mix, add a splash of heavy whipping cream or half and half to the hot water, and stir with the mix. It really takes this chai to the next level. Delicious!
- The mix stores well in a mason jar or airtight container. I use a canning funnel to transfer the mix from the food processor or bowl into the jar or container. It helps prevent spilling any of the mix, which means less cleaning. Definitely a win in my book!
- An easy gift idea for the holiday season would be to place a portion of this mix into a pint size mason jar or other cute container with some fun ribbon and a cute tag on the lid. Perfect host gift or easy addition to a gift basket!
Easy Chai Tea Latte Mix FAQs
Do chai lattes have dairy?
Yes! To make them dairy-free, you would need to replace the powdered dry milk with an alternative of your choice. Also, you could remove the powdered dry milk and add the mix to a heated milk alternative.
Do chai lattes have caffeine?
Yes, but if you use the Lipton Powdered Ice Tea, the amount of caffeine is very small. However, there may be other brands of powdered tea that could contain more caffeine. Be sure to check the label of your tea before assuming that your mix will create a decaf chai latte. Please customize to your needs!
Do chai tea lattes have coffee?
Traditional chai tea lattes and this chai latte recipe from scratch does not. However, you can follow my Dirty Chai Latte recipe, and that drink would have coffee.
Can this chai tea be iced?
While I have not tried it personally, I don’t see why it couldn’t be iced. It may take longer for the sugar to dissolve, but the rest of the ingredients are all fine powders that easily mix in.
