Star of Christmas Ornament with twine loop for hanging on a Christmas tree

The Star of Christmas – Free Crochet Pattern

My mother-in-law has shared with me her love of gifting and receiving Christmas ornaments every year. I did not grow up giving ornaments as gifts very often, but ever since my hubby and I were dating, I have really loved getting to participate in this Christmas tradition. In recent years, we have started to make the ornaments ourselves, which makes each one so much more special. Then each year I have more handmade, unique ornaments that I get to decorate my tree with that help me reflect on so many wonderful memories from the years before.

This year, stars have been a theme I’ve been enjoying for Christmas. Between the star that guided the magi to the birth place of Jesus to the stars that decorate our homes and trees, I have really been taking notice of the beauty of this symbol of Christ’s birth. As a Christian, its meaning has really been hitting home for me this year, but I really love the simple elegance that adding them brings to any party, celebration, decoration, or gift during this season. In fact, I’ve even added a few to a towel I crocheted just to make it more decorative and Christmassy.

Because of how much I love to crochet, I really wanted to write a beginner pattern for a crochet star ornament or appliqué that would be both easy to crochet and would still be delicate and charming. My main thought was, “How do I make a small crochet star?” Then through a lot of trial and error, I came up with a crochet star in the round that utilized the puff stitch to make the center almost lacy and similar to a snowflake, and then a combination of stitches to create solid points around that center. My crochet star also works up very quickly with only 2 rounds, which makes it an easy and quick project for any last minute gifts or decorations this season.

Some ideas for how to use the crochet Star of Christmas would be to add it to a Christmas stocking or present. Also, you could easily whip one up to decorate a gift in a jar such as my DIY Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix or my Instant Chai Tea Latte Mix. Another way I have already used it was as an appliqué to decorate a tea towel that I crocheted. I’m also hoping to make a garland for our mantle or tree that we can reuse every year. If you still need a small gift for a friend or hostess, you could work up a couple of these stars in different colors and attach them to a small bag of treats or mug with a packet of hot cocoa mix or coffee in it. The possibilities are endless! Plus, don’t we always need quick and easy projects for this time of year? Well, the Star of Christmas crochet pattern is here to help!

Tips:

-To create a garland, use the crochet star pattern to create several stars. Then string the stars together on either a long piece of yarn, jute, twine, or ribbon. You could also chain a long string and attach each of your stars at a point with a slip stitch. Check out the blog post Star Garland: A Christmas Crochet Pattern.

-If you want to stiffen up your stars, you can use a fabric stiffener to keep them in one shape. I have not done this because all of my ornaments get put together in storage, and I just flatten them out when I take them out. However, either way should work.

-Tension is key for this pattern. You will want to have consistent tension throughout the rounds to make sure each point is even. Also, you will want to make sure to pull the magic ring extra tight before you weave in the ends of the star.
