Stars are a classic Christmas symbol and decoration, so what goes better at Christmas than a Star Garland? This pattern is perfect for beginner crocheters and is quick to work up to any size. Whether you want to wrap it around your Christmas tree or hang it on your mantle, this Star Garland is a great choice for holiday decor!

Stars are one of my favorite symbols to decorate with at Christmas time. From the star on the top of the tree to little stars on wrapping paper, I love getting to see this beautiful motif everywhere this time of the year.
If you love stars as much as I do, then you will love this Star Garland! It is a wonderful addition to your holiday decor, and you can crochet it in very little time. Plus, you can customize how long you want your garland to be for the space you want it to cover.
This Star Garland is an easy beginner pattern, but if you prefer to watch a video tutorial, then you can find that link below right above the written instructions. I hope these are a helpful and fun way to add some handmade, crochet beauty to your Christmas decor!
Supplies:
- 5 yd. Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn (I love the colors White, Cream, and Ecru from Lily Sugar’n Cream!)
- Twine, Jute, Ribbon, or Garland Yarn (Read note below)
- H/8 5mm Crochet Hook
- Yarn Needle
- Fabric Stiffener (optional)
Notes:
- st – stitch
- ch – chain
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- sl st – slip stitch
- Written in US terms.
- Chain(s) at the beginning of rows do not count as a st. Total st count for each row will be in the parentheses.
- You will need to know how to create a magic ring, and also how to puff stitch into a round.
- Each round will be joined.
- For your garland piece, you could use a long piece of yarn, jute, twine, or ribbon. You could also chain a long string and attach each of your stars at a point with a slip stitch. I will be using twine and a yarn needle to attach the stars.
- You can use a fabric stiffener to stiffen up your stars, but it is not necessary. I have not done this because all of my decorations get put together in storage, and I just flatten them out when I take them out. However, either way should work.
- For a custom garland length, be sure to crochet twice the number of feet you want the length of the garland to be. (Example: 6 foot garland x 2 stars per foot = 12 stars total)
- If you simply want the Star of Christmas pattern, you can find the written instructions here!
Gauge:
No proper gauge since the star is too small. Instead, the final measurements are approximately 2.5 inches from the top point of the star to the center between the bottom points and approximately 3 inches across.
How to Crochet a Star Garland:
Create a magic ring, ch 1.

Round 1: *Puff st, ch 1*; repeat from * to * 4 more times (5 puff sts + 5 ch sts). Sl st to first puff st to close ring, and ch 1.

Round 2: sc into the next st (this st looks as if it’s on top of the first puff st); *in the next ch space complete the following: hdc, dc, ch 1, tr, ch 1, dc, hdc; then sc in the next st.* Repeat from * to * around the ring until you have the 5 star points. You will end with the fifth point, and then to finish the round, sl st into the first sc of Round 2 (5 points + 5 sc). Fasten off and weave in ends.

Repeat these directions until you crochet the number of stars needed (check notes for directions).
Crochet Star Garland Assembly:
To attach the stars to the garland, you can use several methods:
-You can crochet a long ch and attach the stars with a sl st at 6 inch intervals.

-You can use a yarn needle to thread the garland through the stars. I find that the best way to do this is by sewing a whip st back through the top again (shown in video) so that the stars don’t slide all over the place when hung up, but you can still adjust when necessary.
-You can do a running st from back to front to attach the stars so they face one way only.
