Falling Leaves Garland

Falling Leaves Garland: A Free Beginner Crochet Pattern

With the falling leaves outside creating such a beautiful atmosphere, I had to create a decorative pattern that would allow me to bring those lovely colors indoors while creating a cozy, handmade vibe. This crochet garland is bringing me such joy, and I absolutely love having it displayed in my home. With the use of simple stitches and just a few yards of yarn for each leaf, you can make your own Falling Leaves Garland as a wonderful crochet fall decoration that takes very little time to whip up.

Falling Leaves Garland

I love fall, and especially because the decor is amazing! The color options for fall and the motifs are just perfect and they fit with my family’s style since we love all the cozy vibes.

During this fall, I have really been enjoying seeing all the beautiful colors in the trees and scenery around our new home in South Dakota. With so many autumn hues everywhere, I knew I needed a way to bring more of them inside my home, and since I really love the look of the falling leaves on the trails and sidewalks, I decided to combine the two.

Garlands of all kinds are popular, but I really love the look of this crocheted leaf garland. It brings the cozy feeling that handmade items have into my home. Because it is a garland though, it can be made for almost anywhere in your home, which makes me so excited to share it with you! Whether you need living room decor or you want to create a fall themed nursery, this is the perfect garland for the fall season!

Success! You're on the list.

Supplies:

  • 4 yards of Worsted Weight Yarn (4) in 1-3 (or more) Colors for Leaves
  • 3-5 yards of Worsted Weight Yarn or Twine for String of Garland
  • H/8 5mm Crochet Hook
  • Yarn Needle
  • Scissors

The number of yarn colors you will need will depend on how many colors you want to include in your garland. Since the number of yards needed is so small, you could also use scrap yarn for this project. It is a great stash buster project!

With this particular pattern, I don’t feel like you need to be super particular about what type of yarn you use, which is really nice. However, I would say that you may want to create your leaves with similar yarns because the sizing may vary depending on thickness and material.

Also, you do not need to chain the garland string and use twine, but you will only need one or the other. The chained garland string will secure the leaves in place since you will be attaching them with a slip stitch. However, I know some people prefer the look of twine, so I wanted to give it as an option here. If you really wanted to merge the two, you could even create a chain for the garland out of twine. You have options!

Notes:

  • st – Stitch
  • ch-Chain
  • sc – Single Crochet
  • hdc – Half Double Crochet
  • dc – Double Crochet
  • tr – Treble Crochet
  • sl st – Slip Stitch

Written in US terms.

Chain(s) at the beginning of rounds do not count as st.

Total stitch count for each round will be in the parentheses.

If you want a custom size, you will need to decide on how long you want your garland before you start. You will have about 2 leaves per foot if you follow the directions below. You can measure your space in feet and multiply by 2 + 1. This will be the number of leaves that you need to make for your garland before assembly. You will want to make sure that you are not counting the garland ends (10 inch sections at the beginning and end), so that you have a little bit extra for drape while hanging.

To crochet your Falling Leaves Garland, you will start off by crocheting all of your leaves and then crocheting a long chain and attaching each of the leaves to the chain with slip stitches.

Gauge:

Because the leaves are so small, there isn’t a way to get a proper gauge. The size of my leaves though are 2.75-3 inches across from Leaf Point 1 to Leaf Point 3. You don’t need an exact size since type of yarn will make a slight difference. However, if your leaf is too large, you can size down your hook, and if it is too small, then you can size up your hook as needed.

How to Crochet a Fall Leaf:

Create 15 leaves (or however many you need for your custom length garland). I created 5 leaves in each color, but you can crochet the leaves in the colors you desire.

Use the leaf color(s):

-Round 1: Create a magic ring, and sc 6 into the ring. Join the ring with a sl st (6).

example of Sc 6 into magic ring

-Round 2: Ch 1, sc twice in each st from Row 1 , and join with a sl st (12).

-Round 3:

Leaf Point 1: sc in first st, hdc and dc in the next st, tr in the next, ch 2, sl st into the first ch to make a point, ch 2 again, and sl st into the st next to the tr.

Leaf Point 2: ch 1, hdc and dc in the next st, tr in the next, ch 2, sl st into first ch to make a point, tr again in the same st as the first tr of this leaf, dc and hdc in the next st, sl st into next st.

Leaf Point 3: ch 5, sl st into the 4th ch, tr into the next st, dc and hdc into the next st, sc in the next, sl st in final st of Row 2.

Stem: ch 6; sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each st back to leaf (5); sl st into the same base st of the ch. Fasten off, and weave in ends.

Falling Leaves Garland Assembly:

To assemble the garland, you will need to start off by chaining 45 or about 10 inches.

Create a 10 inch chain before attaching your first leaf

Then you will attach the first leaf with a sl st in the back bump of the last sc of the stem.

After attaching the leaf, you will want to ch 30.

Repeat the above two steps until you have attached all of your crocheted leaves. Afterwards, ch 45, or the same number as the beginning.

That’s it! Hang your garland wherever you would like using hooks or other hanging implements. I hope you enjoy this pattern and your handiwork with this Falling Leaves Garland. I would love to see your beautiful project, so please tag me when you share on Instagram @godsgiftofcreativity!
