As a beginner crocheter, I stuck mainly to squares and rectangles because they were so easy to create. Especially when I was in college, I just wanted mindless crocheting to give my overfull brain a break. However, I wish I would have learned how to create circles sooner.
Now, while circles do take a bit more of my brain’s attention at times, they also open up a whole new world of crochet project options for you! From amigurumi (pretty much stuffed animals and other projects) to coasters to beanies, there are sooo many options for how to use circular crochet, and most of the time, it starts with knowing how to create a magic ring, which is what we are going to learn today!

What is magic ring in crochet?
A magic ring, or sometimes called a magic circle, is one method you may use to start a circular crochet piece. It allows you to take your first row of stitches and make them into a small circle that you can tighten down to the size of your liking. To do so, you tighten the circle by pulling firmly on the end of your yarn! While it is not a complicated technique to use, it can take some practice to learn, so I recommend trying it out several times and coming back to this tutorial if you need some reminders.

Notes & Tips for Creating the Magic Ring:
-I suggest holding the yarn with a medium tension as you learn this technique. Too tight or too loose can make it difficult to create the magic ring successfully.
-Pay attention to where the yarn end is versus where the yarn attached to the skein is. It can be easy to mix them up when you are first learning and practicing.
-Make sure you know how to chain, single and double crochet, half double crochet, and slip stitch before you try this! It’s important to understand the basics and feel confident in them first.
What do you need to create a magic ring?
To complete the crochet magic ring, you just need these things:
-a crochet hook
-some yarn
I suggest you use a medium sized crochet hook in accordance to your yarn weight until you feel confident in the crochet magic ring. Because this can be a little tricky to get the hang of, it can be a challenge if you are using too small or too large of a hook. Feel free to use what best suits you and your purposes, but I just wanted to give you a heads up!
Magic Ring FAQs
How do I tighten my magic ring?
To tighten the magic ring, you will pull the end of the yarn that is in the center of the circle. You will need to pull it until your stitches reach the desired tightness and shape, but be careful not to pull too tightly as sometimes the yarn will break.
How do I secure my magic ring?
When securing your magic ring, you can pull it tightly closed to create a kind of knot, and then weave the end in around the center in and around the stitches in the middle. If your yarn seems to be a bit more slippery, then you can use a tapestry needle to sew around the circle and tie a knot, or you could use a magic ring alternative.
What magic ring alternatives are there?
If you need an alternative to the magic ring, you can crochet 3-5 chains, slip stitch to the first chain, and then crochet into the space in the little ring you have created. This can be a great alternative to the magic ring for many cases, but sometimes it can leave a small hole at the bottom that is not as easy to close. Plus, once you have created it, you cannot tighten it to make it smaller. However, in many cases, both the magic ring and this alternative will work great!
How to Crochet Magic Ring for Beginners:
The magic ring has a few steps that you need to complete in order to use it correctly:
1.In your left hand, place the end of the yarn across your palm, and hold it with your thumb. (Make sure your palm is facing you with your fingers pointing to the right. Check the video if needed.)
2.Use your right hand to wrap the yarn around your index and middle fingers. Then bring the yarn across itself to create an X shape.

3.Then half wrap again and hold the yarn with your ring finger against your middle finger. The yarn should have an X shape on the palm side, and two parallel lines on the back of your fingers.

4.Use the crochet hook to go under the first line on the back of your fingers and to hook the second line. You will then pull it under the first line, and twist to create a loop.

5.Slowly ease the yarn ring off your fingers. Be sure not to untwist the loop on your hook and keep the circle shape intact.
6.Chain one (or however many you need), and insert your hook into the circle or ring to create a new stitch.

7.Complete your stitch, continue crocheting the number of stitches you need.

8.Pull the end of the yarn to tighten the magic ring, and you’re done!
If you didn’t get it the first time, don’t worry! This technique can be a little tricky, but it is worth the time and effort to learn. You’ve got this!
