Single Crochet Granny Square

Traditional granny squares use a lot of double crochet or other taller crochet stitches. Today, I’m going to show you how to crochet a more modern granny square with single crochets instead! This single crochet granny square for beginners will be your new favorite crochet project.

Granny squares are a trending topic and have been for a while! While many people love using granny clusters or double crochet stitches to make these crochet motifs, these are not the only options. In fact, the granny square patterns are nearly endless.

However, today, I want to share a simple single crochet granny square pattern with you. It is a unique and modern design that starts with a circle, and then we form the square shape a little later. The originality of the design came from wanting to use it in a pattern that I have coming very soon (keep updated by following me on my Instagram!).

By starting with a circle, the center of the square is more solid in appearance. You could use it to create a bag or more sturdy project, or you could join a bunch together in different colors to make a granny square blanket. Either way would be so pretty and work out so well!

Can you make a granny square with single crochet?

Yes! While it will not look like your traditional granny squares, I love the look of single crochet granny squares! They are a more modern style, and the single crochet stitch means they have a tighter texture. This means they can take a few minutes longer to crochet, but personally, I love the aesthetic of it. Plus, by using single crochets to make your granny square, you can create the granny square look with a modern day twist.

Yarn

The yarn I am using in today’s tutorial is I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby in Mid-Green. This yarn is a worsted weight acrylic yarn that I really love, and the color selection is AMAZING! If you love options, this is the yarn for you. Plus, as a mom, I love that the acrylic is easy to machine wash and dry because that just makes life a whole lot easier!

You could easily use whatever yarn you love best with this granny square pattern tutorial, but know that there will be slight variations if you do so.

Granny Square Size

The finished single crochet granny square should be about 4.5 inches or 11 centimeters across. The yarn you use and tension will effect this a slight amount.

If you wanted to crochet a larger granny square, continue to repeat the directions in Step 6 until the square was the size you desire.
