Crochet Hexie Flower Coaster Pattern

What could be a better way to prep for summer than to crochet some hexie flower coasters? The crochet hexagon is a modern day twist on the granny square, and I feel like it is made even better in this coaster pattern with the addition of the puff stitch flower. Make a set in all different colors for a fun hexie crochet project!

When I first made the Wildflower Crochet Blanket, I had no idea the crochet rabbit trail it would lead me down. That blanket was the catalyst for a bunch of crochet pattern ideas all with crochet flowers at the center. Even though I have not had time to create all of them yet, I have to warn you: be prepared! They are coming!

The Wildflower Crochet Blanket Pattern was made with my Granny Square Flower pattern. However, I love adapting patterns to different looks and styles, and I realized I could easily make the square into a hexagon while keeping the flower front and center. So, that is exactly what I have done here. Then, making it into a coaster just made sense.

The crochet hexie flower coaster pattern is really simple, which I love, and it is perfect for using up those yarn scraps that I always seem to have in abundance. Plus, you can use a variety of different color combinations or go with just one color. That’s the fun thing about hexies. So many options!

Crochet Hexagons

Are crochet hexagons worth it?

Yes! I truly think the crochet hexagons are worth the time and effort they take to make. With so many options for patterns you can make with them, they tend to be one that is easy to put to use in both small and large projects. They also have the added benefit of fitting a more modern style while still being super cozy.

What should I make with crochet hexagons?

Okay, there really are too many options to list here, but I will try to name some larger and smaller projects to help you out. Some bigger ideas would be a blanket, cardigan, or large tote made up of crochet hexagons. A few smaller project ideas might be a coaster, placemat, or child’s purse.

Hexie Flower Coaster Crochet Pattern

Supplies:

  • I/9 5.5mm Crochet Hook
  • ~18 yards total of Cotton Yarn in 3 colors (see notes)
  • Yarn Needle
  • Scissors

Gauge:

Gauge cannot be properly obtained for this pattern, but the finished dimensions should be 4 inches or about 10 centimeters across measuring from one corner to the other on the opposite side. If your dimensions are off, you can add or subtract rounds to your hexie to reach the size you desire.

Notes:

  • BLO – back loop only
  • CC – color change
  • CH – chain
  • INC – increase
  • MR – magic ring
  • Puff ST – puff stitch
  • SC – single crochet
  • SL ST – slip stitch
  • ST – stitch
  • Yarn Note: The thickness of the yarn you use and how tightly you crochet will change the dimensions of your crochet flower hexie. As a result, you may need to crochet less rounds for thicker yarn and more rounds when using thinner yarn. In my example, I am using a mix of yarns to try to give you a rounded example to look at. Your own hexie may turn out differently based on the yarn you use.
  • Written in US terms.
  • Chain at the beginning of each round does not count as a st.
  • The chain between puff stitches does count as a st.
  • Repeat the directions in the asterisks (*) across the row.
  • Total st count for each round will be in the parentheses.
  • You will be working in joined rows for this project. Slip stitch to the first stitch of the round to join.

You can find tutorials for each of the stitches use in the above notes section. You can also find a video tutorial for how to use this crochet flower hexie pattern in a coaster project!

How to Crochet a Flower Hexagon:

Start by creating a MR, and CH1.

  1. SC 6 into the MR (6). SL ST to the first SC to join, and CH 1.
  2. *SC INC* (12). SL ST to join, and CH 1. Note: CC on the last ST if desired!
  3. *Puff ST, CH 1* (12 puffs, 12 CH). CC on last CH 1 if desired. Join, and CH 1.
  4. Skipping over the first puff stitch, *SC 3 times into the CH space between puff stitches* (36). Join, and CH 1.
  5. *SC 5, SC INC* (42). Join, and CH 1.
  6. *SC 6, SC INC* (48). Join, and CH 1.
  7. *SC 7, SC INC* (54). Join, and CH 1. Fasten off, and weave in ends.

Border:

Sl ST in the BLO for 8 STS, CH 1. Then *SL ST in the BLO for 9 STS, CH 1*. SL ST in the final ST, then fasten off and use an invisible join to finish the border. Finally weave in your ends, and you are done!

Note: If you are unsure how to do an invisible join, check out the video where I demonstrate this technique. Have fun!
