Asparagus is a tasty and unique vegetable, and one of my favorite ways to add it to a meal is to make oven roasted asparagus! This quick and simple recipe will take you through the few steps you will want to follow to bake up this delicious and nutritious side.

Spring and asparagus just go together. Asparagus is a spring time vegetable for most of the U.S. and is very welcome after a long winter. The asparagus stems have a unique flavor that goes so well alongside savory dishes or even in a tasty salad. However, my favorite way to prepare this vegetable is by roasting it in the oven.
There are so many vegetables that can be roasted, and asparagus is one of them! It takes so little time to prep. Then all you need to do is pop them in a preheated oven and wait. For serving, you can go simple and just have people grab them off the sheet (like me), or they look beautiful in an oval dish. Serve it up with some Slow Cooker Roast Beef or Instant Pot Marinated Chicken, throw in some sliced bread or baked potatoes, and you’ve got a delicious and filling dinner!

Helpful Tools:
Some of my most used tools in the kitchen are these metal baking sheets. From cookies to roasted vegetables, these have been workhorses in my kitchen. I love that they are lightweight but are so sturdy. The edges are the perfect height for helping you avoid a mess in the oven if things don’t go quite right either. Plus, they come in a variety of sizes, like the smaller one I have here. Grab whatever sizes you need! You can check them out here, or click on the picture below!

Best Roasted Asparagus
If it is your first time ever making oven roasted asparagus, then I have a few tips here that may be helpful for you!
What should I serve with roasted asparagus?
If you are wondering what to serve with roasted asparagus, you have a lot of options! Asparagus goes well with rich and savory foods, but it can also be added to lighter meals as well. Usually, I love to pair it with steak, pasta, or another hearty dinner entree since it will still stand out as a tasty side dish. However, it would easily do well with lighter dishes as well.
Why is my roasted asparagus stringy?
Asparagus will be stringy as it cooks if the stem itself is too mature. The ideal width of an asparagus stem is about the width of a pencil, give or take. When the stem is thicker at the center, the texture when cooked is stringy and not very appetizing.
What herbs go well with roasted asparagus?
Asparagus goes well with so many herbs, but rosemary and thyme are my favorites. I personally love using an Italian seasoning blend since I always have it on hand. However, fresh herbs, such as rosemary would be the best!
How do you know when oven roasted asparagus is done?
Roasted asparagus is done when you are able to softly pierce it with a fork, but it does not fall apart. The term “al dente” can be used to describe what tenderness the asparagus should have. If you are having a problem knowing for sure, you can test it with a fork.
Tips before you start…
- When you are removing the ends of the asparagus, it works best if you hold onto the two ends and bend in the middle of the stem. This will allow the asparagus end to break off where it should naturally and help you avoid any stringiness in texture.
- While you can use the tongs, I use my hands to mix the oil, seasonings, and asparagus until evenly coated.
- When baking, try to lay out the asparagus with minimal overlapping to help them cook evenly.
- Be sure to check with a fork at the end of the baking time to ensure done to your liking.

Supplies:
- Asparagus
- Oil
- Italian Seasoning
- Salt
- Black Pepper
- Baking Sheet
- Tongs (for mixing & serving)

How to Make Oven Roasted Asparagus:
Start off by preheating your oven to 425 degrees.
While your oven is preheating, wash and lightly dry your asparagus. Snap off the bottom ends of the asparagus so you only bake the best parts of the stems.
Lay out the asparagus on the baking sheet. Season with Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Drizzle the oil over the top.
Mix the asparagus and seasonings gently until the stems are evenly coated.
Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes. Check at 15 minutes with a fork for “al dente” texture.
Once done, remove from oven and allow to cool for a minute. Then serve from the baking sheet or place in a warm serving dish for your table. Enjoy!
