Lemon Peel Stitch Washcloth: A Beginner Crochet Pattern

When I was preparing to have my little one, I of course started out by crocheting him a lot of special items. However, one of the projects I made several times was this lemon peel stitch washcloth. It was so simple to work up, and I loved that even though it was an easy crochet pattern, it still looked beautiful and worked very well. I still use these washcloths I made all the time. I thought you all might like to have a washcloth pattern that uses this beginner crochet stitch as well.

Lemon Peel Stitch Washcloth (Dishcloth) Free Pattern

The lemon peel stitch washcloth, or dishcloth, will be a free crochet pattern here on the blog! Here is what you need to know:

Crochet Level: Beginner

While this crochet washcloth is for beginners, the expectation is that you have practiced the beginner crochet stitches. If you don’t know the basic stitches, you can check them out in my blog post 6 Beginner Crochet Stitches.

Crochet Washcloth Yarn:

I have crocheted this washcloth pattern with various yarns, but it depends on what you will be your washcloth for. With my little one, I used 100% acrylic yarn that I had left over from another pattern. These are very durable and have held up well under a lot of washes.

However, most people prefer to crochet their washcloths from 100% cotton yarn. I really love using a worsted weight or light worsted weight cotton yarn when I am making something for my kitchen. Both yarn types will work well!

Also, I recommend that you use a worsted weight or light worsted weight for durability. Thinner yarns tend not to hold up as well. Thicker yarns tend not to dry out as quickly. Keep this in mind when choosing your yarn!

In my video, I used a mixture of Hobbii Cotton 8/8 yarn and I Love This Cotton Yarn from Hobby Lobby. You can use whatever brand that matches the yarn weight, or you can experiment with a favorite yarn.

Crochet Stitches:

To crochet the lemon peel stitch dishcloth, you will need to know the following crochet stitches:

How long does it take to crochet a washcloth?

To crochet a washcloth with this pattern, it takes less than an hour. The exact time will depend on the yarn and hook you choose and the size you are trying to make, but this pattern, like other lemon peel stitch crochet patterns, works up quickly and is perfect for beginner crocheters!

How to Do a Lemon Peel Stitch:

The lemon peel stitch is a simple combination of stitches. You will start with a single crochet and then double crochet in the next stitch. Along the entire row, you will alternate between the two, and end with a double crochet in the last stitch. You can find the full lemon peel stitch crochet tutorial here on my blog, or you can watch the beginner video below.

Gauge:

Because the crochet lemon peel stitch dishcloth can be customized so much, it is hard to give an exact gauge. Instead, I would measure your stitches and rows as you go to ensure that your washcloth is the size you desire.

My example washcloth has a gauge of 16 stitches (lemon peel) by 12 rows to create a 4″ by 4″ square. The finished washcloth is 8″ by 8″, but you could crochet a smaller or larger washcloth by adding or subtracting stitches and rows.
