Front post crochet and back post crochet techniques are two ways that you can alter the look of a beginner stitch simply by changing where you work your stitch.

To help you understand how to work the front post and back post techniques, I am going to explain: the parts of the stitch, some frequently asked questions, how to work front post and back post stitches, and how you might use them.

Parts of a Stitch

The parts of a stitch that we will be working around today are the post. The post of the stitch is the portion of the body that gives it height. For most basic stitches, the post starts right below the top of the stitch (where you normally work a stitch). It extends down to the bottom (where the stitch was worked into the previous row).

For the front post and back post crochet techniques, we will be working around this portion of the stitch. To do this, you will insert your hook into the spaces on either side of the post. I will show you how to do so below!

What is the difference between front post and back post crochet?

The difference between front post and back post crochet are where you insert your hook. Front post crochet is worked around the post from the front. Back post crochet is worked from the back. Both stitches work around the post of a stitch instead of inserting the hook into the top.
