Crochet: How I Got Started

When I was about 8 or 9 years old, my grandma invited me out to her house to celebrate my birthday. It was something she tried to do when my sisters and I were young: she would take us to lunch and then out to her house where we got to spend the day with just her. During one of these special days, she happened to have out some of her crochet work. I saw it and watched her stitch all the way across the afghan she was making. She was amazingly fast and her work was beautiful, so of course, as a little girl who looked up to my grandma, I wanted to be able to create the beautiful work too. Grandma Bartlett was so patient with me. She taught me how to create a slip knot to start, how to chain, how to single crochet to build something with just a hook, some yarn, and a picture in your mind of what you wanted to create. While teaching me that day, I don’t know if she realized how much that time spent would mean to me. From that day, I have always thought of Grandma Bartlett when I crochet, and even though she is gone today, I can still hold close this special memory.

Because of this memory and several others, crochet is a special type of creativity for me. It is amazing how many different styles and patterns people can come up with. Crochet essentially is building something, but instead of wood or nails, you use yarn and a hook. Plus, of course, an idea of what the end product should be. Such a simple set up to make such beautiful things from afghans to socks to pot holders. As with anything, the more you practice and learn new stitches or techniques, the more things you can create. Therefore, to me, crochet is a wonderful and simple type of creativity.

Now, with this blog, I would love to start sharing with you different patterns or techniques so that you may try out or practice crochet for yourself! I will probably start out simple, but I hope you will test out your own crochet skills and let me know how it works for you. Also, for those who are new to crochet, please let me know how I can help you get started. If you have any questions, concerns, comments, or just want to talk through an idea, reach out because I would love to help!
