Granny square pouches are a simple and cute way to use granny squares of all designs, and they are a quick crochet project that most advanced beginners can do. You can use a variety of granny squares with this pattern, and it can be a perfect option to help you use up some scrap yarn. Whether you want to give it with or as a gift or use it for yourself, this small drawstring granny square bag is a project that you will want to make and save in your pattern stash!

I have really been loving experimenting with different styles of granny squares lately and with different patterns for them. Among the experiments, I thought of creating this granny square pouch pattern from the Flower Granny Square pattern I used in my Petal Pocket Hanger pattern. When I created this pattern, I really fell in love with it, and this is just the first of many design ideas that will be coming in the future.
This pouch is the perfect size for kids to use, or it could be used to hold small items as well. I am imagining using it for a small snack bag, for tissues, for crayons and paper, or even for some face scrubbies when you are on the go! Really, the possibilities for how to use this little drawstring pouch are many, and you could make the flower center, petals, and background match your own color preferences. Plus, if you are using it as a gift, you could match it to the rest of the colors in the gift or have it stand alone as a small favor with some chocolates or other treats inside.
Now, what I really love about this pattern is that it can truly be made with whatever style of granny square that you prefer. If you don’t love the Flower Granny Square, then you have lots of options! You could use the solid granny square, the granny stitch square, or any other variation you know and love. The whole idea is to use a pattern you love and make it the focal point of the whole design. Now, you will want to make sure to adjust accordingly, but I’ll be giving you notes throughout the pattern to help you along.
Now, let’s get crocheting!

Pouch Assembly:
- Place the 2 granny squares on top of one another with the right sides facing out.
- Use the stitch markers to “pin” the corners of the squares together.
- Starting at the corner where you still have the yarn attached, sc the squares together. Be sure to sc first in the ch sp, in each st across the side, and then in the next ch sp. Crochet in both loops of each st. (16) Ch 1.
- Remove the marker. Sc in the ch sp, sc in each st across the side, and sc in the ch sp. (16) Ch 1.
- Repeat step 4 along the last side. Ch 2 at the end.
- Along the final side, you will create a dc border around the opening. The ch 2 will be your first dc, dc in each ch sp and st all the way around. (32) Sl st to close. Fasten off and weave in ends.
- With a new piece of yarn, ch 50 or 15 inches, and fasten off. This is your drawstring.
- Starting in the middle of the front of your pouch, use the yarn needle to sew the drawstring back and forth in between the dc sts. Pull tight to close your pouch. Tie a bow, and you are finished!
