Point the Way Beanie Pattern

The Point the Way Beanie is a great crochet beanie for fall! It is easy to create with a simple one row repeat, and it has the perfect fit for those chilly days that aren’t quite cold enough for the thicker layers. If you are a beanie lover, you need to make your own Point the Way Beanie!

Fall always makes me think of beanies, but let’s be honest, it isn’t always cold enough for them! I love my thick, cozy beanies for those cold winter months, but this year has been way too warm for those thick layers. Instead, I grab my Point the Way Beanie for those chilly morning walks that I love.

When designing this beginner crochet beanie, I really wanted to create something that would work for my whole family. My little boy was the inspiration for this particular design since he really does not enjoy hats with a tight fit. Thus, my goal was to create a unisex crochet beanie pattern that was slouchy in fit, but easy enough for a beginner to crochet. Not to brag, but I think I nailed it on this one!

Why you will love the Point the Way Beanie:

It’s the perfect crochet beanie for beginners!

When designing this pattern, I wanted to use a stitch that beginners could master, and that created a beautiful pattern with very little effort. The herringbone double crochet stitch is simple enough that beginners can learn it quickly, and the texture is made just by working in the back loop only.

You can make this crochet beanie without a magic circle!

I know so many crocheters who hate using the magic circle. While there is a time and place for it, I designed this crochet hat pattern so you do not have to use a magic circle at all!

Style it your way!

Some people love to add the pom poms to their beanies, while others like crochet beanies without a pom pom. Really, this beanie pattern could be styled either way and still look amazing!

Make one for the whole family!

The unisex beanie design allows you to crochet a beanie for men or women. Plus, there are sizes for the whole family included from Newborn Baby to Adult Large. Crochet one for everyone in your family!

Yarn for the Point the Way Beanie:

The yarn you use for this pattern will definitely impact the slouchiness of the beanie. I used Yarn Bee Soft Secret in Dusty Teal from Hobby Lobby, which is labeled as a worsted weight yarn. However, I found that it behaved similar to a DK weight or even a thick sport weight yarn when working with testers.

If you are struggling to meet gauge, you can check out my post here on some basics for how to help!

Notes:

ch – Chain

blo – Back Loop Only

hbdc – Herringbone Double Crochet (stitch tutorial linked)

sl st – Slip Stitch

st – Stitch

-Written in US terms.

-Chains at the beginning of rows does not count as a st.

-Repeat the directions in the asterisks (*) across the row.

-Total st count for each row will be in the parentheses, and will be according to the sizes: (Newborn, 3-6 month, 6-12 month, Child Small, Child Medium, Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large)

Yarn Note:

The yarn you use is especially important for getting the correct gauge! I created this pattern using the Yarn Bee Soft Secret, which is a thin worsted weight. You may be able to use a DK weight or even thick sport weight yarn to make gauge. Also, you can go by measurements instead if that is easier for you!

Gauge:

15 sts by 10 rows creates a 4 inch square.

Ch. 21. Follow the directions below for 12 rows and measure the inside sts and rows for accurate measurement.

Adult Medium22-23”8.5”18”12”
Adult Large23-24”9”19”13”

Custom Sizing – Measure the circumference & height of your head. Make sure your row 1 is about 2” longer than the height of your head. Then follow the directions until the rectangle is about 2-3” shorter than your head circumference.

This beanie is more slouchy in build, so you may want to size down for a tighter fit.
