Ever feel like there are just not enough hours in the day to do all the things you want to do? Me too! So here are a few easy tips and tricks you can use to make time to crochet throughout your day. These tips will take a little bit of thought to put into place in the beginning, but they have been the most helpful for me to keep myself in the groove of crocheting, even just a little bit, nearly every day.

1. Change your mindset.
Sometimes we expect far too much of ourselves. We want to be perfectly productive all the time, and end up choosing to be critical of ourselves when we fall short of that expectation. This mindset right off the bat needs to be changed. While we may have a goal of trying to crochet a certain amount of time every day, or completing a certain pattern or whatnot by a designated time, we need to realize that our failing to meet these standards is not always the most important part of our lives or even what we should be focusing on.
Crochet can be a wonderful way for us to use our time, but I would never want anyone to choose to not do it or give up on it because they might fail or have failed at some point. Choose instead to have a mindset of grace for yourself. Crocheting is an opportunity for you to create something handmade and unique and can be a fun hobby or more! Let it be so for you, and when you make a mistake, get busy, or whatever happens, remember that it is okay for those things to occur. Each day provides new opportunities. Just try again tomorrow!

2. Create a crochet essentials basket.
Soooo many maker friends I’ve seen with their own crochet spots in their house, and I love it! But with my little one being so mobile and constantly wanting to create messes all over the house, I have found it easier to just have a crochet basket. With a basket, I can move my crochet essentials to various areas of the house, but I can also keep more than one work in progress in it. This helps me keep my own crochet chaos somewhat contained, and allows me to move it around as needed. This way I can crochet anywhere in the house while my little man is playing or I’m cooking or whatever. If my crochet supplies are mobile, I can crochet anywhere in my home!

3. Make a crochet bag for on the go!
For those of you who like to be on the go or enjoy the outdoors, I highly suggest you create a crochet bag. Honestly this can easily be done by throwing a current crochet project with its yarn and hook into a nearby clean tote and taking it with you to a sports practice or on an errand run. Then you can crochet in the car while someone else drives, crochet in the bleachers while you wait for your kids to finish practice, or crochet whenever you have a few minutes in between stops. I personally love to crochet when we are on long car rides, but even if you aren’t able to crochet while riding, you can still have it with you to use during down time at a stop!

4. Work on projects you enjoy!
I know this sounds like a no brainer, but so often we want to work on something we think others will love, or that we thought we would like when we started, but it ends up being something that we hate working on. Now, I’m usually one to just push through the things I don’t enjoy, but if this is stopping you from crocheting at all, then don’t do it. Don’t feel bad about it. It’s okay to change your mind or realize that you don’t like something. Instead, you can frog, or rip out, that project, and use the yarn for something you do enjoy!
5. Little bits at a time.
Many people I talk to about learning crochet simply say that they don’t have time to sit there and crochet for hours on end. Well, to be frank, I don’t either. Very rarely, if ever, have I sat down and crocheted the day away. More often, I get little bits of time throughout the day that add up to a lot of time overall. So make a plan to focus for say 10 minutes at a time for a couple points during your day, and then see what you can make with just those little bits at a time. You’ll probably be surprised with how much you can accomplish!

6. Faith over fear.
Now, this may seem like a weird sounding tip, but hear me out! I have listened to many people say that they can’t crochet, or create in general, because they aren’t artsy or creative. I don’t believe that for one minute, and you shouldn’t either! Crocheting is a skill that any person can learn. Some people may pick it up faster than others, but you need to have faith that in the practice process you will progress in your new skills. Don’t give into fear that says you can’t do it. That’s a lie. You can! It may not always be pretty (believe me when I tell you that I have and do make MANY mistakes), but you can crochet and make it part of your life. It’s a beautiful skill, and I know you can do it!
7. Don’t give into comparison!
This tip goes hand in hand with number 6. Most often we give into fear about our abilities because we are comparing ourselves with someone else. Don’t do it! Your hands will crochet unique and amazing projects that only you can make. While we want to stay humble enough to learn from others, we do not want to get into the habit of wishing we were them or could do the things they do. Such a mindset is not healthy in life, nor is it helpful when creating. Every person has to start out knowing nothing and learning from what others know, but it takes putting that learning into practice that makes you a better crocheter. Remember that you are unique, wonderful, and that you can create beautiful works of art! Now, go do it!

Hope these help!
I hope these tips help you get started in the process of making crochet a part of your busy life! Everyone can crochet, but we all can use some help and encouragement at times. My goal was and is to give you some help and tips for how to crochet, create, and enjoy the results in your life.
