Even Moss Stitch

How to Even Moss Stitch: Step-by-Step Guide & Video

The Even Moss Stitch is a dense stitch combination that creates a lovely texture on both sides of your work! I absolutely love this stitch because of its versatility, and it is a simple stitch for beginners to pick up and use. With relatively few steps and just two easy stitches, you can create your own crochet project using the Even Moss stitch!

Even Moss Stitch

When my grandmother first taught me how to crochet, she only taught me one stitch: the single crochet. As I grew in my skills, I quickly lost interest from completing the same stitch over and over again, and since we didn’t see my grandmother all that often, I couldn’t just run and ask her to teach me more. The result was that my crochet journey got put on hold until college.

When I rediscovered my interest in crocheting, I once again went back to single crochet as my base, but I quickly desired and sought out help for learning more and more stitches. Even now after crocheting for almost ten years consecutively, I still enjoy learning more stitches and playing around with different textures.

This is why I wanted to give my beginner friends access to some different stitch combinations. I don’t want you to become bored and give up on crocheting! While it does take time and effort to make things with our hands, I believe it is important to continue hands-on skills and creative arts that people have done for years before us. We are the way these traditions and skills get passed down, which I find quite amazing to be part of.

Now, the stitch that I want to teach you today is called the Even Moss stitch, and it is not complicated at all. In fact, it is just a half double crochet and slip stitch that alternate back and forth. While there are a few notes to keep in mind, this stitch is a simple and easy one for beginners to try out when they are getting bored of just doing one stitch over and over.

As an added bonus, I wanted to supply you with a beginner level pattern to give you a reason to start using this stitch. The Even Moss stitch tutorial will come first with a step by step guide and video, and then the pattern for the Rustic Ranch Washcloth will be at the end.

P.S. You can grab the printable version of the Rustic Ranch Dishcloth & Washcloth pattern from my Etsy shop! Link is here.

Notes & Tips for the Even Moss Stitch:

Just a couple things to keep in mind when crocheting the Even Moss stitch:

  • Remember to not slip stitch too tightly as you will need to be able to insert your hook into it again for the next row.
  • You can start the Even Moss stitch by using the slip stitch OR the half double crochet first. It doesn’t matter which, but make sure you end with the same stitch you started with.
  • When you repeat rows, make sure to half double crochet in the tops of your half double crochets from the previous row only, and slip stitch in your slip stitches. This will create the lovely texture you want!
  • When creating your foundation chain, make sure to chain an even number! Then start the Even Moss stitch in the second chain from the hook.

What do you need:

To complete the even moss stitch, you just need:

-crochet hook

-yarn

At the time of this post, this yarn is part of a great sale! Check it out!

I highly recommend that you use the crochet hook that corresponds to the yarn weight unless you want to experiment. This is already a dense stitch, so if you use a smaller hook than recommended, it could end up with a very tight result.

How to Crochet the Even Moss Stitch:

To crochet the even moss stitch, you start the chain the same way, but you have two options for how to complete it:

  1. Chain an even number of chains to your desired length.
  2. Option 1: In the second chain from the hook, half double crochet, then slip stitch in the next chain. Continue to alternate back and forth along the entire row.
  3. Option 2: In the second chain from the hook, slip stitch, then half double crochet in the next chain. Continue to alternate back and forth along the entire row.

Most often, I go with option 2 because the ends are a little more even for me, but you will have to experiment and see what works the best for you!

What do you use the Even Moss Stitch for?

There are so many project options that would work wonderfully with this stitch! Some ideas I have are:

-Washcloths & Dishcloths

-Headbands

-Beanies

-Scarves

-Blankets

My suggestion would be to think about projects that you want to be thick and chunky because that is what the result will be like!

Rustic Ranch Washcloth Pattern:

Supplies:

  • Hook: Size H/8 5mm
  • Yarn: 2oz. worsted weight, 100% cotton yarn
  • Yarn Needle
  • Scissors

You need to know:
ch = chain
st = stitch
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
hdc = half double crochet

All stitches in U.S. terms.

Notes:
-Base ch does not count as a row.
-Your sl st at the end of each of the rows can be a little looser to make it easier to insert your hook when you crochet on top of it.
-You do not need to do the border row. I don’t always because I feel like the final product looks a little more rustic without, but make yours to fit your taste!

Washcloth

  • Ch 32.
  • Row 1: In the second ch from the hook, *sl st in the second ch and hdc in the next ch*. Continue from * to * until the end of the row. You should end with a sl st. Then ch 1 and turn.
  • Repeat Row 1 for a total of 31 rows to make a square washcloth. The final product should be about 7.5in. by 7.5in. (If you are not doing the border, you can fasten off and weave in the ends, and you are done!)
  • Border(optional): Ch1.Do not turn. Sc in the end of each row for a total of 31st, ch 1 in the corner, sc 31 along the bottom of the washcloth, ch 1 in the corner, sc 31 on the remaining two sides with a ch 1 in each corner. Fasten off, and weave in ends. Ta dah! You did it!
