Anyone who knows me, knows my love of coffee. It’s a pretty big thing. However, I am not one to go to the coffee shop every day, and I don’t want to have my coffee be something that puts a big dent into our budget. Even the flavored syrups you can buy at the store are more than I want to spend on my morning coffee. So, as is my style, I have found a simple syrup recipe, so I could make it myself from scratch.

And you know what I found? The flavored syrups are super easy and quite cheap to make! You really just need to have sugar, water, and the extract of whatever flavoring you want. For example, if you want vanilla flavoring, you need vanilla extract. I know that sounds simple, but some flavorings have harder to find extracts or ones that can only be found seasonly. If this is the case, I highly suggest you grab some the next time it comes back into season, you could find it online, or you could also begin to make your own! Just depends on what is available to you and what you would like to do!

Now, I usually just make this syrup for the flavors we like to have on hand for our coffee in the morning, but you can use this for other things as well. If you love Italian sodas, this flavored syrup works great too. Also, we use it in iced tea in the summer months as well because it stirs in much better than sugar, and you get the added flavor! In fact, you could use the simple syrup by itself if you wanted to sweeten other drinks without the flavors, especially if they are cold.

What do you use simple syrup for?

You can use this simple syrup recipe, flavored or not, in a lot of things, but here are some possibilities:

  • Coffee
  • Italian Sodas
  • Iced Tea
  • Cocktails

Whenever we’ve tried these methods, we love to mix up the flavors and sometimes add other things, like chocolate or fresh fruit to really make these drinks special!

How do you use simple syrup?

To use simple syrup in a drink, you simply need to add a small amount to a base drink of choice. For example, you could add 1-2 tablespoons to your morning coffee. Then simply mix in and enjoy!

How do you store simple syrup?

If you are planning to use the simple syrup within a few days, then it is okay to keep in an air-tight container on the counter. However, if you intend on keeping it around a little longer, then I suggest putting it in the fridge in an air-tight container to help it last longer.

What do you need to make simple syrup:

  • Sugar
  • Hot water
  • Extract (optional)

In its most basic form, all you need to make this simple syrup recipe is sugar and hot water in a two to one ratio (e.g. 2 cups sugar to 1 cup of hot water). Now what makes this work is the hot water. It can’t just be hot to the touch. The water needs to be boiling or thereabouts. I often use an electric kettle to heat my water, but you could do the same with a kettle on the stove or in a pot. Either way, you will need to make sure the hot water is really hot.

You could absolutely just use this syrup as a sweetener by itself, but if you choose to add the extract of your choice, you will then make this into a flavored syrup. Both are super delicious, and both have their uses in the kitchen.

How to make simple syrup:

Start off by heating your water to boiling via your preferred method. While it is heating up, measure out your sugar into a heat safe bowl or large glass measuring cup.

Once the water reaches boiling, pour the water into the heat safe bowl with the sugar.

Next, stir continuously until the sugar dissolves completely. I like to use a metal spoon to stir so I can scoop it up to check if there are any granules of sugar left in the mixture.

Once the sugar is dissolved, you can then stir in the extract, if using. Add a small amount to your drink or use of choice, mix, and enjoy!
