I don’t know about your family, but my family is all about that comfort food during the winter months. My hubby calls it “hibernation”, and winter does feel like that sometimes. When we can’t get outside much and have to stay inside bundled up, I do end up feeling like a mama bear all cozy in its cave.

During our “hibernation” months, I really love taking out this chicken and gravy recipe and serving it up with a heaping pile of mashed potatoes and some roasted veggies. I really love how it is super easy to make the gravy from scratch, and then you just settle the chicken right into it for cooking. Set the timer, and you are done!

Even when we are really busy in the evenings with the daylight hours still being so short, I can whip this up in the morning and have it ready in the evening for us to gobble up. Plus, this is probably one of my hubby’s favorites to come home to after working outside in the cold all day. It just helps you warm up from the inside out!

If you have never made homemade gravy before, don’t worry! I’ve got an easy way to make some really tasty gravy that only takes a few basic ingredients. For my family, I have been trying to replace seasoning and gravy packets that we used to use with homemade replacements. This chicken gravy is a tasty alternative that I’ve learned how to make, and I think it’s the best chicken gravy by far!

How do you make homemade gravy?

Add the broth and seasonings
Add the broth and seasonings

Homemade gravy is really simple to make, but it can take practice to perfect. You really just need broth, flour or another thickener, and a fat like butter. I prefer to mix up the butter and flour first before adding them to the broth because it can help avoid lumps in your gravy, but I’ve eaten plenty of lumpy gravy that tastes just fine, especially when slow cooked with the meat. A bonus to homemade gravy is that you can flavor it with your favorite seasonings as well! In my recipe, I’ve kept things pretty basic, but you could easily add other seasonings that you love to make your own version.

Will gravy thicken as it cooks?

Yes! Gravy will thicken as it cooks in the slow cooker. I like to make a thinner gravy for this recipe because it will thicken slightly as it cooks, but if you are a lover of thick gravy, you may want to thicken it up by cooking it on the Sauté function for a couple of minutes longer, or you could do so after cooking the chicken as well.

Which chicken gravy is best?

Personally, I think homemade chicken gravy is the best. Between flavor combinations and ease of making, homemade chicken gravy ranks pretty high for me! Don’t be afraid to give it a try. It’s a lot easier than you think.
