Since posting my step-by-step guide on Easy DIY Christmas Gift Tags, I have had some inspiration on other types of gifts tags you could make on your own! Because Christmas is on the way though, and my house is surrounded by lots of snow, I decided I would share with you all how to diy snowman gift tags.

Snowmen to me are quintessentially Christmas, but they are also a lovely and fun part of winter in general. Where I live, we can make snowmen most of the winter time, and I really love getting to create projects that use them. Hence these gifts tags!

Now, since I love craft projects that are easy for kids to participate in, this project could easily be done with children of all sizes. I highly suggest reading the directions ahead of time though and deciding what steps are easy for your child or children to do, and what parts you will need to do for them. This will make the process flow so much easier, and hopefully be more fun! I will make some recommendations throughout the directions, but please use your own judgement to decide what will work best for your family. After all, you are the one who knows your kiddos best!

These tags could easily be used for Christmas gifts, stockings, gifts in a jar, or whatever you need them for. You could even make several and use them for winter birthdays, Christmas parties, teacher gifts, or anything else that comes up last minute! While I am still working on putting it into practice more often, I want to try to be more prepared for last minute gifting (and wrapping!) at this time of year, so I will probably be making a few of these gift tags and keeping them with the wrapping paper to help this momma out.

What do you write on a Christmas gift tag?

Most often, you will want to simply explain who the gift is for, who it is from, and then a short little message. The message doesn’t have to be long or even very thought out, such as “Happy Holidays!” However, it could also be a little note that is more personal, but it is really up to you. My advice is to keep in mind to whom you are giving the gift and what the gift is. Then decide if you want to write something personal, or go with more of a holiday greeting. There isn’t really a hard right or wrong. Simply let them know you are thinking of them this holiday season.

What do I need to make my own Christmas gift tags?

For these DIY Snowman Gift Tags, you will need:

White Card Stock Paper: I suggest a thicker gauge paper, as this will make it easier to punch out circles for the snowman! You could potentially use construction paper, but I would test cutting circles out with a lever punch before committing to using it for your gift tags.

Seasonal Paper: I also recommend a thicker gauge paper for this as it will not bend or crumple as easily and will maintain its integrity when you attach the snowman to it. However, if you are using two sided paper, I would be sure that the side you choose to write on is not too dark unless you have a metallic pen or something that will write well on dark colors. Otherwise, you will not be able to see what you wrote!

Circle Shape Lever Punch (2 sizes): While the punch is not necessary, it is very helpful to quickly punch out circles to make your snowmen. I have a 1.5 inch punch and a 2 inch punch that I used for this activity. You could easily trace circles and cut them out with scissors if you have kids old enough to accomplish this or you feel up to it. Just be aware that your circles need to be small enough to fit on the gift tag itself.

Single Hole Punch: Using this tool makes it much easier to attach the gift tag to the present, stocking, or whatever you need. If you don’t have one, you can fold the paper over to cut out a hole for string or ribbon, but the hole punch makes this job much quicker.

Ribbon or String: You need this to attach your beautiful DIY gift tag to your present before placing it under the tree. Ribbon or string will work. I often look at the colors of my seasonal paper I’ve chosen and then decide the ribbon I want to use to match it.

Scissors or Paper Cutter: You will need one of these to cut your gifts tags the size you would like.

Ruler: Measure out the size of gifts tags you want based on how big your snowman will be. Whatever size your circles are for your snowman, make the gift tag at least as wide as the largest circle and up to 1/2 inch wider, and long enough to fit the combined diameters of the two circles.

Double-Sided Tape or Glue: To attach your snowman to the front of your gift tag, you really could use either one. Remember, if you use glue, you will need to give it time to dry before you attach it to your gift.

Pen & Pencil: Don’t forget to fill out your gift tag!

-If you are making these gift tags with toddlers or kiddos who don’t have a long attention span, you could cut out the snowman circles and gift tags, and punch the hole for the ribbon ahead of time, and cut the ribbon into pieces long enough for your tags. Then they could help build the snowmen on the gift tags and pick out the ribbon they want to use for the gift tags. This may help them feel a part of the process without stressing you out too much. 🙂
