Crochet Gift Box Ornament – Beginner Pattern!

Lately, I’ve really been loving simple, functional crochet patterns that still look super cute. Most of the time I love crochet patterns that are a little more complicated to make because of the end result, but while I’m crocheting them, it can easily get frustrating. Sometimes I even put off the more complicated projects until I have a time that I can focus on them because of all the steps or stitches that I have to count or stitch markers that I need to remember. For me, before bed stitching needs to be a little more simple.

With simple being the goal in mind and Christmas right around the corner, I created a gift box ornament pattern that is unique and could even double as a gift card holder. I really love how this pattern gives me an opportunity to use the Christmas ribbon that I can’t help buying at all of the after Christmas sales (anyone else?), or if you aren’t a ribbon person, you could definitely make this gift box ornament with a crochet “ribbon” because what is a gift box without a bow?

The variations you could create for this pattern are endless, and you wouldn’t necessarily need to just use it for Christmas. Anytime you might give someone a gift card could be a perfect time to use this Crochet Gift Box Ornament. Plus, if you are beginner crocheter, this ornament is a quick project that only uses single crochets, slip stitches, and chains in a repetitive fashion. However, as an experienced crocheter, I also really enjoyed making this quick and easy project for my own home. Also, I’m giving you this as a free Christmas ornament pattern just for the bonus factor!

Now, I will say that I would appreciate you sharing this pattern with others, and I would love to see your Crochet Gift Box Ornaments! Share it with me on Facebook or Instagram by tagging me at @godsgiftofcreativity.

How do you crochet an ornament?

While there are many patterns for ornaments out there, the Crochet Gift Box Ornament is created by crocheting the two side pieces, and then you will stuff it and single crochet the sides together. Once the stuffed piece is created, you will then get to decorate it with your ribbon, Christmas or crocheted. Then place wherever you wish! Another option is to attach the optional pocket to the back, place a gift card inside, and give the combo as a special, unique, and handmade Christmas gift!

What do you need to crochet a Christmas Ornament?

#4 Worsted Weight Yarn: I used acrylic yarn, but I’m sure you could use any worsted weight yarn that you have available. I love the colors Christmas Red, Hunter Green, and White from Hobbii for Christmas time, but you can use whatever color or brand you prefer. If you choose to not use a Christmas ribbon, you will probably want to have a second contrasting color to crochet your “ribbon” with.

H/8 5mm Hook: I absolutely love this size hook for this pattern, and I often use it in my patterns since it works so well for many cotton and acrylic yarns. Hobbii features the Easy Touch Crochet Hook in all sizes, so if you need to get started on a collection or need one for a gift to go with your Gift Box Ornament, hit them up!

Yarn Needle: You will only really need this to weave in your ends, but this is super helpful to getting the clean look you want for your projects. Also, a yarn needle is super helpful for wrapping the ribbon around your finished gift box ornament and for attaching the hanging string.

Filling: To give your ornament a little squish and body, you will need some filling. The exact amount will depend on how full you want to make your ornament.

Christmas Ribbon (optional): Every gift box needs a ribbon for decoration, right? This is really where you get to make the ornament match your own tastes. Personally, I love grabbing my Christmas ribbon when craft stores are all having their after Christmas sales, and then I save it for projects like this! You will want thin, wireless ribbon for this project, preferably 3/8 in. or smaller. I used a 3/8 in. wide ribbon for my red gift box ornament, so you will have an idea of what it looks like. Any wider of a ribbon, and it may not fit through the border stitches that keep it in place. Alternatively, you could definitely crochet a length of ribbon and use that instead, but I really love getting the chance to add ribbon when I can.

Notes & Tips:

The pattern is written in US terms.

sl st – Slip Stitch
Chain(s) at the beginning of rounds do not count as a st. Total st count for each round will be in the parentheses.

Gauge is not necessary for this pattern, but measurements are approximately 3.75 inches wide and 3.5 inches.

Adding the Ribbon:

Note: Chain a length about 22 inches to 24 inches long if that is your choice instead of ribbon. Then follow these directions.

-Using the yarn needle, thread the ribbon through the center seam st on the top of the box from back to front (follow pictures for help), and then through the bottom from front to back. Give yourself about 2 feet of ribbon for this process.
