Christmas time is wonderful for me for many reasons, but really they all boil down to the pleasure of just enjoying the simple things in life. Now, I know that this time of year gets crazy for all of us, whether bustling everywhere or frantically trying to find gifts for everyone, but while those things exist in this season, it is really the enjoyment of just being with the people I love most that makes Christmas wonderful. When you add to that the gift of Jesus’ birth, it makes it the most wonderful time of the year.
However, there are still those other “things” to be done, and I know most of us are right in the middle of them. This past weekend we went hunting for our Christmas tree in the woods, and today I am super excited to start the decorating process for not only the tree, but our house! We always wait until after Thanksgiving to start, and now that December is closing in, it is time for the decorating to commence!
A favorite decoration of mine happens to be our Christmas stockings. While my hubby and I have had ours for a while, our little one needed his very own stocking. So I wondered “Can you crochet a vintage, classic style Christmas stocking?” and the answer was most definitely “Yes!”
Because I know many makers are looking for ways to use their crochet in their own home or for markets, I thought I would create and post my free crochet Christmas Stocking pattern just for you all. The bonus for this pattern is just how easy it is with mainly using the single crochet stitch, and it would be a great pattern for beginner to intermediate beginner crocheters. However, experienced crocheters could definitely customize this pattern by adding letters, like in my example pictures, or other decorations. I love a crochet project that is easy to customize!

Now, I will say that I have this pattern up in my Etsy shop if you want to view it without the ads, but either way, I would love to see your vintage crochet Christmas stocking! Classy Christmas Stocking Pattern
Supplies:
- H/5mm crochet hook
- #4 Worsted Weight yarn, in 2 different colors
- Yarn Needle
- Crochet Scissors
Basics:
- Written in US terms.
- st – stitch
- ch – chain
- sc – single crochet
- sc # – single crochet once into the next number of stitches indicated
- sc2tog – single crochet 2 together
- hdc – half double crochet
- blo – back loop only
- sl st – slip stitch
- cc – change color or contrasting color (note: this is optional as you could easily make this stocking with just one color. However, the pattern will indicate color changes for you to follow.)
- Chain(s) at the beginning of rows do not count as a st. Total st count for each row will be in the parentheses.
Gauge:
16 single crochet stitches by 18 rows should give you a 4 inch square.
Notes:
-When making the two pieces of the stocking body, be sure to make opposite “wrong” sides. This will make it easier to simply put the wrong sides together at the end, and you will avoid having to weave in lots of ends. Check the pictures for help!
-In my book, what makes this stocking easy is the fact that it is worked in two flat pieces, front and back, and then seamed around the edge with one single crochet per row or stitch around the body of the sock. As a result, the stocking lays more like a vintage style stocking.
-After you have seamed the outside, you will then make the cuff of the stocking and attach it as well as the hanging loop from to the top of the stocking. This allows the cuff to stand out a bit and makes seaming easier.
Classy Stocking Directions:
Body of the stocking- Make two with opposite “wrong” sides.
- With body color of stocking: Ch. 31
- Row 1: sc in second loop from hook, and sc across (30); ch 1 and turn.
- Row 2: sc across (30); ch 1 and turn.
- Rows 3-10: repeat Row 2.
- Row 11: sc 2, sc2tog, sc 22, sc2tog, sc 2 (28); ch 1 and turn.
- Row 12: sc across (28); ch 1 and turn.
- Rows 13-22: repeat Row 12.
- Row 23: sc 2, sc2tog, sc 20, sc2tog, sc 2 (26); ch 1 and turn.
- Row 24: sc 26 (26); ch 1 and turn.
- Rows 25-42: repeat Row 24.
Now is where we will start the top of the heel. The color we have been working with will be color 1 (c1) and the heel color will be color 2 (c2).

- Row 43: c1 sc 13, cc, c2 sc 13 (26); ch 1 and turn.
- Row 44: c2 sc 13, cc, c1 sc 13, ch 10 (26 + ch 10); turn, but be careful not to twist.
- Row 45: c1 sc in 2nd loop from hook, sc in each ch across, sc 13 more in same color, cc, c2 sc 13 (35) ch 1 and turn.
- Row 46: c2 sc 13, cc, c1 sc 22, ch 2 (35 + ch 2); turn.
- Row 47: c1 sc in 2nd loop from hook, sc 22, cc, c2 sc 13 (36); ch 1 and turn.
- Row 48: c2 sc 13, cc, c1 sc 23, ch 2 (36 + ch 2); turn.
- Row 49: c1 sc in second loop from hook, sc 23, cc, c2 sc 13 (37); ch 1 and turn.
- Row 50: c2 sc 13, cc, c1 sc 24 (37); ch 1 and turn.
- Row 51: c1 sc 24, cc, c2 sc 13 (37); ch 1 and turn.
- Rows 52-56: repeat Rows 50-51.
- Row 57: c1 sc 24, cc, c2 sc 11, sc2tog (36); ch 1 and turn.
- Row 58: c2 sc 12, cc, c1 sc 24 (36); ch 1 and turn.
- Row 59: c1 sc2tog, sc 22, cc, c2 sc 10, sc2tog (34); ch 1 and turn.
- Row 60: c2 sc 11, cc, c1 sc 23 (34); ch 1 and turn.
- Row 61: c1 sc2tog, sc 21, cc, c2 sc 9, sc2tog (32); ch 1 and turn.
- Row 62: c2 sc 10, cc, c1 sc 22 (32); ch 1 and turn.
- Row 63: c1 sc2tog, sc 20, cc, c2 sc 8, sc2tog (30); fasten off and weave in ends.

Assembly:
- Put the two stocking pieces together so that the “wrong” sides are on the inside. They should line up easily. (Note: I usually don’t weave in the color changes for the stockings. I just make sure they are all on the “wrong” side, then hide them inside the stocking. Work smarter, not harder, right?)
- Attach the yarn to the top and sc down the body, around the toe, sole, and heel of the foot, and back up the other side. Be sure each stitch is through both stocking pieces to ensure that they are seamed together well. Once complete, fasten off and weave in ends.
Cuff (optional):
You can use the same contrasting color (color 2) or use another color to crochet the cuff piece.
- Ch 11.
- Row 1: hdc in the second loop from the hook, hdc in each ch across (10); ch 1 and turn.
- Row 2: hdc in blo 10 (10); ch 1 and turn.
- Row 3-48: repeat Row 2. Fasten off and weave in ends.
The goal with the cuff piece is to make it just fit around the stocking so that you can fold it over the top.
Loop:
- Ch 4.
- Row 1: sc in second loop from the hook, sc across (3); ch 1 and turn.
- Row 2: sc across (3); ch 1 and turn.
- Repeat Row 2 until loop is long enough for your taste when folded in half. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Final Assembly:
-Place cuff inside top edge of stocking. Line up the cuff edge with the stocking edge.
-Sew or sl st the two edges together. Be sure to leave a space at the hanging corner for the loop.
-Sew or sl st the folded loop into place on the corner.
-Flip the cuff over so it is folded over the top of the stocking. Pull the loop through the space left for it. Weave in any ends. Hang where you wish, and enjoy!
