Blankets have been a staple of my crochet life for several years. I have always had a love of blankets, but my love continued to grow when I was able to create them myself! I even got to a point where I was wanting to share this love with others, especially my family.
I have shared before how my grandma was the one who originally taught me how to crochet. However, life takes many turns, and by the time I was in college, I had pretty much forgotten entirely about crochet. My freshman year though, I met a friend who reminded me all about it when I walked in on her crocheting while watching a movie. As I watched her crochet a few rows, I remembered the day my grandma taught me and how special it had been to learn from her. Then and there, I decided to pick my crochet hook back up.
Now, relearning everything wasn’t exactly easy, but the good news about crochet is that it isn’t the most complicated skill to pick up either. Plus, college is a great time to learn to work with your hands as well as your mind. 😉 As a result, the first few creations were not my most complicated pieces, but they were enough to get me hooked on crochet again (pun intended :)).
When you are first learning anything, you have to practice the skill over and over again before you will master it. For me, this meant creating my first blanket using one simple stitch. This blanket became my husband’s big, chunky, red-white-and-blue blanket. It ended up being his Christmas gift that year, and it also ended up being the first of several in a string of blankets that I crocheted for family members as gifts.

In order to make my first blanket, my friends and I would head to Craft Warehouse and grab all of the overstock or clearance yarn we could get our hands on (while being on a college kid budget). Because the yarn often came in 4 packs of randomly matched colors, we all ended up with a pile of leftover yarn skeins that did not match any of our styles. After looking at this pile of yarn, I had a thought to create a blanket for myself! My thought was to call it a scrap yarn blanket, and in a sense that is what it became. I used whatever yarn any of us did not want, could not use, or had left over to create a patchwork-inspired, chunky blanket. This blanket was one of my favorite cozy go-tos when dealing with those rainy, Pacific Northwest winters, and it has been well loved throughout its years.

As I continued throughout college and beyond, I kept crocheting blankets, first for my family members and then for some friends, but I also started to expand my horizons to other types of crochet projects. (Some of these you can see in my Etsy shop.) No matter what though, blankets have always been some of my most favorite projects to create and give to others. They allow me to show love in a tangible way, and I love how I get to use my hands to create and share!

What are things that you love to create? How are you using your creative abilities? I would love to hear your stories or see how your creative talents are being used! Please use any of the photos to inspire you to create your own crochet blankets, or if you have any questions about any of them, please let me know in the comments below!
As always, keep creating!
