The faux knot is a really popular look for headbands of all kinds. It is a lovely way to add a little texture and interest to your headband, and as a bonus, it is pretty simple to create, especially with crochet! All you need are a long string of yarn and a yarn needle to accomplish this modern look. Even beginner crocheters can use this step by step guide to create the crochet knotted headband look.

I don’t know about you, but fashion is not my strong suit. I try to stick with what is comfortable and what I really love, and sometimes my fashion sense is a little out of date. Most of the time, it has to do with not feeling comfortable in those things that are popular with many others. If it doesn’t feel right, I know I won’t wear it, so what’s the point? Instead, I try to stick to those things that are nearly always in style and that I can count on to be both comfortable and classy.
However, the faux knot headband is one fashionable piece that I really love. It can be used in so many crochet patterns and with all different kinds of stitch textures! You can use the knot to add some interest to a headband made from simple stitches, or you can make it the focal point to a complex, cozy beauty. The choice is totally up to you and what you like best! Personally, I think the crochet knotted headband is a must for fall and winter fashion, and all it really takes to create the knot is a few stitches in the right place.
Because of how versatile this faux knot method is to add to any headband, I wanted to share it with you as an option for your own projects and experiments. I hope you love it as much as I do!

How do you wear a knotted headband?
How you wear a knotted headband depends on your own preference. There are a few options available to you. You can place the knot right in the center of your forehead, or you can place it to one side or the other if you prefer. The other popular option is to place it under a low ponytail or bun. The knot creates a thinner section of the headband, which will fit under these hairstyles better than the rest of the band.
How do you crochet a knotted headband?
There are several ways to crochet a knotted headband. However, the most common way is to crochet the band itself in a long rectangle that fits the circumference of your head. Then you seam the ends together in a specific method to create the knotted look.
If you are really stuck, you can measure the circumference of your head from the nape of your neck, over your ears, around your forehead, and back around to get your head measurement. Then you will crochet the headband piece between 3 and 4 inches wide, and anywhere from 1-3 inches less than your head measurement.

What do you need to know:
To create a knotted crochet headband, you will need to know:
–Basic sewing stitch (The Running Stitch)
-How to crochet a rectangle
Beginners who have created the rectangular headband piece should be able to follow the step by step guide to creating the knot for their headband. If you have a pattern you are following, then be sure to follow their directions first before implementing this strategy. However, if you are simply experimenting on your own, then you should be just fine to go for it!
Supplies:
You can use this method for many types of headbands. Here is what you will need:
-Headband piece (long rectangle that fits the circumference of your head) with long yarn tail
-Yarn Needle
That’s it! If you want some ideas for how to crochet a headband piece, you can check out any of the stitch tutorials on my blog for inspiration. Then you can measure the circumference of your head from the nape of your neck, over your ears, around your forehead, and back around. Then you will want to crochet the headband piece between 3 and 4 inches wide, and as long as about 1-3 inches less than your measurement for head circumference.
Notes & Tips for Creating the Knot:
-While you want to create a secure seam, try not to pull too tightly. This can cause bunching, which is not the look we want.
-Remember that you will only be seaming two layers at a time.
-Don’t worry too much about a perfect stitch count. Try instead to sew evenly.
-Didn’t leave a long tail? That’s fine. Just be sure to securely attach your yarn to the top left side according to the directions below.
How to Make a Crochet Knotted Headband:
-With the right side (the side you want showing – check video) on the inside, fold each of the short ends into a sideways U-shape. Make sure the two U-shapes open up to each other, and that the left U has the long tail for sewing on the top.

-Place the bottom half of the left U inside the right U, and place the top half of the right U inside the left U. Fold the two U’s together, and your ends are now in place for seaming.

-Start at the end attached to the long tail, and sew the two edges that are touching together first (top left U, top right U).

-Then sew the middle two edges together (top right U, bottom left U).

-Finally, sew the bottom two edges together. (bottom left U, bottom right U) Fasten off and weave in ends on the wrong side. Flip inside out, and you’re done!
I knew you could do it! If you are struggling to understand how to create the knot from just the written directions, then definitely watch how I do an example in the video. I know that really helped me when I was first learning. I hope this tutorial was helpful for you guys, and I can’t wait to see how you use it!
